Connecting HDTV

Installing an HD television

Installing an HD Television TV with optional VCR and / or DVD player

HD televisions, contrasted to "HD Ready" displays, are self-contained, integrated units, complete with tuner(s) for off air reception of both digital and NTSC signals. "HD Ready" displays are designed to operate with an external set top box and in some models only video is accepted, demanding an external audio system.

HD televisions include connecting ports at the rear for permanent connections and convenience ports on the front for a camcorder, headphones or the like. Loudspeakers are internal but may be supplemented with external speaker(s) to provide some level of surround sound. Convenient connections are provided for an STB for satellite or cable connection. Most models will be "off-air ready" and some models will be "Cable Ready" including a slot for the insertion of the CableCard needed to decode the cable channels. Such models thus avoid the need for a separate off-air or cable STB.

In essence, the set-up includes:

  • Large screen HD television (illustrated) or monitor with terrestrial 8VSB STB;
  • Satellite or cable STB, if desired;
  • VCR, if desired.
  • DVD, if desired
  • Antenna, set-top, internal or roof-top, appropriately selected for reception at your location.

Two possible connections of the HD signals from an STB (if used) are shown. That in (1) connects the analog HD components Y, PR, PB to the TV/monitor. In (2) the digital components R, G, B are connected using the HDMI or DVI connection, if available, resulting in improved quality. In either case, analog audio may be connected directly, for recording purposes on the VCR. The HDMI connection, if included, includes both digital HD video and digital audio, thus simplifying interconnection.

Set up the TV and any associated external loudspeakers in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

· Connect the cable (F coaxial) coming from the terrestrial antenna to the Antenna port of the VCR (if used) or directly to the Antenna port of the HD television.

· If a VCR is used, connect a cable (F coaxial) from the TV port on the VCR to the Antenna port of the HD television

· If an analog NTSC cable service is used, connect its cable feed (F coaxial) to the Cable Input of the TV. If digital cable service is used and the television is NOT a fully provisioned Cable Ready one, then the connection should be made to the digital cable STB.

· Connect the output of a digital cable STB to the digital HDTV connection (DVI or HDMI) on the TV using the appropriate multi-pin cable as shown in (2) on the diagram. If the digital connection is unavailable, then connect the STB to the television using the analog component HDTV connections Y, Pr, Pb of the TV as in (1), using RCA video cables.
·
· Connect the STB analog audio L/R to Input 1, L/R of the TV using RCA audio cables.

· Other devices may be connected to the TV on the unused inputs as needed.

If your installation includes a VCR, connect it as follows:

· Connect the S, L, R analog Composite Output of the VCR to the Composite Input 3 of the TV using an S-Video cable and RCA audio cables. If an S-Video connection is not provided, connect the Video Out of the VCR to the Video In 3 of the TV using an RCA video cable.

· Connect the S, L, R Composite Input of the VCR to the Composite Output of the TV using an S-Video cable and RCA audio cables. If an S-Video connection is not provided, connect the Video Out of the TV to the Video In of the VCR using an RCA video cable.

If your installation includes a DVD, proceed as follows:

· The DVD player to be installed may be connected with its output in progressive component form (best quality) or in interlaced composite form (S-Video – best quality or NTSC). Both options are indicated in the diagram. Ensure that the DVD player is programmed appropriately (progressive or interlaced) to match the input format selected in the HD television.

· For the best quality, connect the component output Y, Pr, Pb of the DVD player to the component input 5 of the TV using three RCA video cables. If component output is not provided, then connect either the S-Video out or the Video Out of the DVD to Composite Input 2 of the TV using appropriate cables.

· Connect the Audio L/R output of the DVD player to the L/R audio inputs 2 of the TV using RCA audio cables.

Programming for the HD Television

Some coordination of the selections in the HDTV is needed to ensure simple operation and may require the setting up of menus in the TV for maximum convenience. Reference should be made to the “Initial Set Up” section of the respective manuals for the procedures to be followed.

Note that the DVD player must also be programmed correctly to output either Progressive or Interlaced video, matching the mode selected in the HD television.
