HDTV in Canada

HIGH DEFINITION TELEVISION IS HAPPENING IN CANADA!

If you think DVD’s look pretty on that HD Television…
WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE HDTV PROGRAMMING SERVICES!!!

DID YOU KNOW?

- Now, in Canada, real High Definition Television (HDTV) programming services can be viewed on that beautiful HDTV monitor – and MORE services are coming in HDTV!

- Specialty services in High Definition are here now! Services such as Discovery Channel Canada, TSN, TMN, and CITY-HD are available in HDTV with a growing number of special programming and events shot in true HDTV and with 5.1 channel Dolby Digital® surround sound.

- CTV, Canwest Global, Toronto1, and CBC are awaiting approval of licenses from the CRTC to broadcast HDTV services over-the-air in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.

  • Many homes in these areas will be able to view these HD services directly with a special antenna and an HD television – or may be obtained by other homes across Canada by satellite or cable.
  • It is expected that selected local stations will hit the airwaves in HDTV in these centres within the next 12-18 months. CITY-HD is already broadcasting in digital on channel 53 from the CN Tower in Toronto.
  • Many favourite prime time and special event programs are now shot in HD and look stunning on an HD television!

HDTV programming services may also be obtained by satellite or cable.

For example, the ExpressVu Direct-to-Home services, available Canada-wide, offers 5 programs in HDTV and 47 programs in DTV.

In some areas, cable companies are also offering HDTV programming.

 WHAT DO YOU NEED?

- An HD television with antenna for local over-the-air reception where available.
- A set-top box (as specified by the satellite or cable provider), if this reception mode is selected.
- An audio decoder or home theatre unit (to benefit from 5.1 channel Dolby Digital® surround sound).
- Alternatively, you may be able to view HD content (but at lower quality) on your existing TV with the addition of a suitable set-top box.
