I noticed (and correct me if I am wrong) that HDTV signals are broadcast on a separate frequency from the normal station channel. Is there a listing of HDTV broadcast frequencies/channels for HDTV in the Greater Toronto Area? Including potentially receivable U.S. signals. Thanks.

I would doubt it unless you have a very high outside antenna. Ch. 53 is receivable in Hamilton and Burlington with a good antenna. Channel 53 is relatively low power, but high on the CN Tower so you may be lucky. CITY-TV HD is carried of course on cable and satellite, so that may be an alternative.

At present, I am living in the north end of Toronto, 401 & Martin Grove, on the eleventh floor of a high rise, facing south.
I currently receive, with my Samsung SIR-T165 HDTV receiver and a ubiquitous single bow-tie antenna, the following channels:
WGRZ - 2.1
WIVB - 4.1 / 23.1
WIVB Radar Channel - 4.2 / 23.2
WNLO - 4.3 / 23.3
WKBW - 7.1
WKBW ABC News Now - 7.2
CBLT - 20.1 - test patern
CBLFT - 24.1 - test patern
WUTV - 29.1 / 29.2
WNED - 43.1 /43.2 / 43.3
CITY TV - 53.1
Toronto 1 - 66.1
I have an eight bay Channel Master 4228 that I have boxed out on the balcony and may set it up if and when more distant channels become available.
I have checked for Digital Channel 15 from Hamilton and Digital Channel 20 for CFTO but neither seem to be up and running at present. Plus I don't see anything for Global or OMNI starting up anytime soon.

City-TV digital is on channel 53 which is 704 – 710. The suppressed carrier is at 309.44 kHz above the lower edge of the channel or 704.30944 MHz in this case. Toronto 1 HD is on ch. 66 which is 782 – 788 Mhz.

CITY-DT is authroised to move up to 1300 watts ERP and will shortly implement it. Ch. 66, Toronto-1 is running 3 kW ERP from the First Canadian Place tower. When CTV comes on-air on ch. 40 it will be at 17.4 kW ERP from the CN Tower and CBLT-DT will be on ch. 20 with 38 kW ERP. These latter signals will be more widely receivable, even on indoor antennas.

FYI, at the office, 25 KM straight line away with almost a direct-view of the CN Tower we can receive the CityTV HD terrestrial signal with an outdoor antenna. It is one of those enclosed round, directional RV style antennas. It would almost have to be pointed directly at it or it wouldn't receive it! I would REALLY like to receive it at home, but I do not have a direct-line of sight and I'm over 40km away. Last I heard they are broadcasting only at 700 Watts, very low.

Have a look at the thread Indoor Reception in HDTV Coverage. The CRC comments are most helpful. You should have no problem at your location with the Toronto signals and likely would get the Buffalo channels as well with an enhanced, outdoor antenna.

I am curious to know whether or not a strong HDTV signal can be had with an indoor antenna from a 2 story house located in the Yonge and Sheppard area. What would be the best indoor HDTV antenna to purchase? I am just looking to pickup the CityTV signal in HD and local stations when they become available not US.

Yes, DTV stations which will broadcast HDTV operate on channels in the VHF and UHF bands use for convebtional NTSC broadcasting, but on different channels specifically alloted and licensed for this service. All existing Canadian TV stations have been alloted a channel by Industry Canada but only a few have applied for DTV licenses so far and only CITY-TV is on the air with HDTV in Toronto. Others will follow shortly.

In Toronto, can also be received a number of DTV channels from Buffalo, including WGRZ-DT (NBC), ch. 33, WIVB-DT (CBS) ch. 39, WKBW-DT (ABC) ch. 38, WNED-DT (ch. 43) and possibly others as they come on line. These stations do not carry HDTV full time and often air up-converted NTSC programming. WNED-DT uses its channel most of the time for 3 SDTV programs.
