With my 65 year old's eyesight viewing a 42" plasma at 9 feet, will I be able to notice the difference between a 480p picture and a 720p picture? My optometrist does claim I am corrected to almost 20-20 with my glasses. That is, will I notice the difference between a $3,000+ set and a $5,000+ set?

Without any doubt you will see the difference on material that is shot originally in HDTV. It also depends on the distance from the screen that you use. Up close, in the region of 5 to 7 feet from the screen, you will have true HDTV reception if you have 20/20 vision. If you sit further back, the advantage of HDTV gradually diminishes. Go try it in the show room, but make sure that you are really looking at an HDTV source.
