Take a look at:
www.wendy.seltzer.org/mythtv or www.eff.org/broadcastflag/cookbook if you are really interested in making your own. If not, the major BDU’s have HDTV PVR offering available and a recent announcement from Mitsubishi of their HD-6000 unit opens up PVR possibilities for OTA HDTV as well. The HD PVR is becoming very popular.

I got my Bell ExpressVu 6000 receiver modified by the people at R5000. It allows the receiver to be hooked up to a pc via USB 2.0 and record the transport stream to your Hard Drive. High Def material comes in at about 9 gigs an hour so a large HD is required. Playback using TheatherTek is awesome. Can schedule recordings using Zap2it as well. Can split the file using HDTV2MPEG and archive on 2 DVD's. Works pretty well and they are having a sale right now.

DVD recorders and Cable boxes
I am reviewing the options for receiving HDTV. I like the idea of a PVR, but do not want to lose the ability to physically transfer what I copy to another room/device (as is easy to do with a VCR/video tape). The solution appears to be a dvd recorder with an included hard drive and many such models are now appearing in stores.

However, do these devices hook up with the HD cable boxes (and specifically the one offered by Rogers)? I've reviewed the model numbers with the manufacturer's website and find that all of the hookup diagrams only refer to VCR's, not recordable DVD.

Also, if they do hook up, is there anything that prevents the recording of both STD and HD digital cable signals or would it function like a HD digital cable PVR model?

Comment from Admin.
Generally, STB’s provide HD output on DVI or HDMI connections for digital interconnection with a secure HD display, HD output as analog Y, Pr, Pb or RGB and an NTSC output and/or S-Video output for a VHS or other recorder, at 525 SD resolution. Current DVD Recorders are interfaced at either the NTSC or S-Video level or at the digital DV (Firewire/IEEE1394) level, so recording at SD is possible, but not HD unless down-converted. An HDPVR will, of course, record and playback HD directly.

Sony has introduced two new HDTV recorders in the USA that can record OTA HDTV broadcasts as well as analogue broadcasts. The DHG-HDD500 can record up to 60 hours of HD programming and costs $999.99 US. The DHG-HDD250 costs $799.99 US and can record up to 30 hours of HD programming. Detailed specifications for both models can be found on the Sony web site at http://www.sony.com

When, or even if, these two models will be made available in Canada is unknown.
